Dive into 80’s Budapest

Take lots of communist-era concrete, acres of gorgeous greenery, and add generous amounts of crystal clear water, and what do you get? A splendid park with two perfect pools to spend a lovely afternoon in the best of 80’s Budapest. The kids, my husband and I spent last Friday and Sunday afternoon at Külkerpark, a sports complex tucked into a Buda hillside that was once the exclusive green getaway for Foreign Ministry workers and their families. It may no longer be run by the state, but it hasn’t changed much – the lifeguard (called the “swim master” in Hungarian, much more appropriate) still blows the whistle too much, showing a clear preference for dutiful lap swimmers over giggling, splashing children. The snack bar still offers the best of Hungarian summer “cuisine,” from lángos (fried dough with sour cream and cheese) to palacsinta (crepes), cheap, good coffee to pálinka shots. And the changing rooms still lack sufficient toilet paper and ventilation. But a good time was and is had by all at this gem. After swim season’s over, there are tennis courts, a climbing wall, soccer fields and an aging playground to enjoy…

How to: KülkerPark is off Budakeszi út in District II and can be reached by car and by buses 22 and 222 from Széll Kálmán tér, Bölcsőde stop. There is parking, for a fee, which you can pay together with the entry fee (which depends on what you plan to do there) when you drive in. Info in Hungarian only, on www.kulkerpark.hu. About adriknows

One day, people looking for tips on life in Budapest started coming to me. Friends, then friends of friends, and so on. People were telling newcomers and longtime Budapesters alike, “Adri knows!” Now it’s time to share what I’ve picked up over more than a decade of fun-and-frequently-frazzled family life in the big BP.

Thought you may want to know about this – seems a certain Ken White is passing himself off as the author of your article: http://www.thedaily.hu/dive-into-80%E2%80%B2s-budapest/

      Dear Rayner,
Thank you for pointing this out! It appears that Ken is doing that, however, we have an agreement that he may repost my posts on http://www.thedaily.hu. You are correct in that it is not clear at all that I am the author and he and I are working on a solution. Thank you so much!
      Adri
